If you are a complete beginner, start with N5. The levels progress from N5 (easiest) to N1 (most difficult). Each level builds upon the previous one. If you already have some Japanese knowledge, you can take a practice test to assess your current level.
Preparation time varies by level and prior knowledge. For N5, expect 150-300 study hours. For N4, 300-500 hours. N3 requires 450-700 hours, N2 needs 600-1200 hours, and N1 requires 900-1800 hours of dedicated study.
