When should I start preparing for April 2027 entry to a Japanese graduate school?
Start at least 12 months before your target arrival — so April 2026 for April 2027 entry. The earliest hard deadline is the MEXT Embassy Recommendation, which closes May–June 2026. Working backwards: research universities + supervisors July–October 2025, draft research plan November 2025–March 2026, MEXT embassy application due May–June 2026, written exam July 2026, primary results September 2026, university placement November 2026–January 2027, COE + visa February–March 2027, arrival April 2027.
What's the difference between April and October entry?
April entry is the standard Japanese academic year start; most national universities only admit at this point. October entry is offered by some English-track programs (G30 universities, OIST, NAIST) and is convenient for international students avoiding the January–March visa rush. October-entry MEXT typically requires applying to the embassy track December–February of the same year.
When does the MEXT embassy track open?
Each Embassy of Japan announces its 2027 cycle around April–May 2026 with applications due May–June 2026 (varies by country). Written exam happens July 2026, primary results September 2026, secondary screening + university placement November 2026–January 2027, MEXT awards confirmed February–March 2027. Embassy track is decided BEFORE university applications open in most countries.
When do Japanese university applications open for April 2027?
For April 2027 entry: most Japanese-track programs open applications August–September 2026 with deadlines October–December 2026. Entrance exams October 2026–February 2027. English-track G30 programs open applications June–August 2026 with deadlines September–November 2026. MEXT University Recommendation applications run September 2026–January 2027 separately.
How long does the JLPT prep + research-plan writing take?
JLPT N3 to N2 typically takes 600–800 study hours over 8–14 months. JLPT N2 to N1 takes another 600–800 hours over 9–14 months. Research-plan writing typically takes 4–8 weeks of part-time work, including 2–3 supervisor email rounds. Plan your timeline so JLPT December 2026 results arrive before any Japanese-track entrance exam.
When should I email a prospective professor?
6–12 months before the application deadline. For April 2027 entry: contact prospective supervisors July–October 2026. The first email is the most important step — most students get rejected at this gate. See the linked "How to email a Japanese professor" guide for the template.
When do I apply for the COE and visa?
After acceptance is confirmed (typically February 2027 for April 2027 entry). COE (Certificate of Eligibility) is issued by Japan immigration in 4–8 weeks; your university handles the COE application on your behalf. Once COE arrives, take it + your passport to the Japanese embassy in your country for the student visa (5–10 working days).
