Frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose Embassy vs University track now?
Embassy Recommendation goes through your home country's Embassy of Japan, has fixed deadlines (May–June 2026), and MEXT places you at one of three universities you list. University Recommendation goes directly through your target university (deadlines vary, September 2026–January 2027) and is restricted to that university.
Which is more competitive?
Embassy track in absolute terms — small country quotas. University track is higher acceptance rate but limited to participating universities. Most STEM applicants apply through both.
Can I apply MEXT for Physics?
Yes — every Physics program at a national university is MEXT-eligible. OIST is private + uses its own MEXT-equivalent fellowship.
