Frequently Asked Questions
When is the next JLPT exam?
The JLPT is held twice a year — on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. The next exam dates are Sunday, July 5, 2026 and Sunday, December 6, 2026, followed by Sunday, July 4, 2027 and Sunday, December 5, 2027. The calendar at the top of this page shows whichever exam is closest to today and how many days remain.
How often is the JLPT held?
The JLPT is held twice a year in roughly 80 countries. Inside Japan, every level (N1 through N5) is offered at both the July and December sittings. Outside Japan some smaller test sites only run one sitting per year — usually December — so always check your local registration page before assuming both windows are available where you live.
What is JEES MyPage?
JEES MyPage is the official online portal run by the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), which administers the JLPT inside Japan. You create a free MyPage account once, then use it every sitting to apply for the test, pay the application fee, download your test voucher, and view your results. The portal lives at info.jees-jlpt.jp and is the only way to register inside Japan. Test-takers outside Japan register through their country-specific local body instead, listed in the table on this page.
When does JLPT registration open?
Registration windows are short — usually 2 to 3 weeks each. For the July sitting, most countries open registration in early-to-mid March and close in early April. For the December sitting, registration generally opens in mid-to-late August and closes in early September. Exact dates shift by a week or two each year, and inside Japan the JEES window is announced on info.jees-jlpt.jp roughly one month before it opens. Check your country row in the table above and bookmark your local site.
Can I register late for the JLPT?
No. The JLPT does not accept late applications, walk-ins, or transfers between sittings. If you miss the registration window — even by one day — you must wait until the next sitting. There is also no waitlist, so popular test sites in Tokyo, Osaka, and major international cities fill up quickly. Apply within the first few days of the window opening if you want a preferred test location.
How much does the JLPT cost?
Inside Japan, the application fee is ¥7,500 per level (tax included) for all levels N1–N5, paid through JEES MyPage by credit card or convenience store. Outside Japan, fees vary by country and local body — typically the equivalent of US$50 to US$110. The US (AATJ) charges around US$95, India (Japan Foundation New Delhi) around INR 1,800, and the UK (SOAS) around GBP 60. Check your local registration page for the current fee in your currency.
Do I need a passport to take the JLPT?
You need a valid government-issued photo ID on the day of the test. Inside Japan, a residence card (在留カード), passport, or driving licence is accepted. Outside Japan, most countries require a passport — some accept national ID cards but rules vary by test site. Your test voucher (downloaded from MyPage or your local portal a few weeks before the exam) lists the exact IDs accepted at your specific site. Bring the voucher plus the matching ID — without both, you will not be allowed to sit the test.
